An insider for the Phillies reports that they have no plans to sign another starting pitcher during this offseason.
While the Philadelphia Phillies are exploring options for offseason acquisitions, an insider suggests that the team is unlikely to secure another starting pitcher. Recent discussions revolved around the Phillies’ engagement with coveted free agent pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Before Aaron Nola committed to a long-term deal with the Phillies, there were strong rumors of the front office’s interest in pursuing the 25-year-old Japanese talent. However, following Nola’s signing, which amounted to $172 million over seven years, significantly less than what Yamamoto is anticipated to receive, Philadelphia appears inclined towards smaller additions, if any.
Matt Gelb from The Athletic shared insights in response to queries about additional starting pitching. He indicated that the Phillies aren’t likely to attract free-agent starters seeking guaranteed money or starts, given the team’s already established five starters. Gelb outlined that the team’s pitch might involve offering potential reserve roles to free-agent pitchers, particularly those on the fringe seeking stability.
The Phillies seem set on a rotation comprising Nola, Zack Wheeler, Taijuan Walker, Ranger Suarez, and Christopher Sanchez. Although acquiring Yamamoto could significantly bolster their pitching lineup, his expected price poses financial challenges for a team already committed to the second-highest payroll for the 2024 season.
In line with Gelb’s perspective, it appears improbable that the Phillies will secure high-profile starting pitchers. Should they pursue new additions, the focus might shift towards relievers or reclamation projects that could contribute within their minor league system.
