The Pittsburgh Steelers have made adjustments to their quarterback lineup with the return of Kenny Pickett.

After a brief stint of just over a month with the team, quarterback Trace McSorley, a former Penn State standout, is parting ways with the Steelers. McSorley had joined the practice squad in early December due to Kenny Pickett’s injury. However, with Pickett back in action, the Steelers are creating space on their practice squad as they prepare for the playoffs.

Currently, the Steelers have three quarterbacks available for game days and had all three dressed for their Week 18 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. In the postseason, they have the flexibility to apply the third quarterback rule, potentially making Mitch Trubisky inactive while keeping him available should Mason Rudolph and Pickett face game-time challenges.

McSorley will now enter free agency, seeking to join his sixth team. Originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round, he has had stints with the Arizona Cardinals and spent time with the New England Patriots during the summer but didn’t secure a spot on the 53-man roster. Later, he briefly signed with the Chicago Bears’ practice squad.

With McSorley’s departure, the Steelers have an available spot on their practice squad as they enter Wild Card week. Recently, they added outside linebacker David Perales while parting ways with safety Nate Meadors. Additionally, if the Steelers intend to sign practice squad safety Eric Rowe and inside linebacker Myles Jack to the 53-man roster for their playoff campaign, they’ll need to create roster spots for them.
