Alabama’s new football coach, Kalen DeBoer, has secured his defensive coordinator in the form of former South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack, who left his position with the Jaguars for the role. DeBoer, who arrived at Alabama from Washington with previous coaching stints at Fresno State and Indiana, received advice from Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne on the importance of someone familiar with southern culture.
Byrne emphasized the need for a coach who understands “sweet tea and grits,” echoing the guidance given to Crimson Tide basketball coach Nate Oats. Wommack, a former player at Arkansas and Southern Miss with coaching experience at Tennessee-Martin, Jacksonville State, and Ole Miss, served as USA’s linebackers coach and defensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017 before returning as head coach in 2021.
Wommack, now filling the void left by the retired Kevin Steele, expressed excitement about having more resources but emphasized the importance of understanding the capabilities of the team. In an interview with AL.com, he highlighted his approach to defensive coordination, focusing on maximizing players’ opportunities and creating winning strategies.
Known for employing a 4-2-5 defensive scheme throughout his career, Wommack places significant emphasis on the safeties in his strategy. His expertise in play calling and game planning, coupled with his experience as a head coach, brings a valuable perspective to the Crimson Tide. Wommack, who worked alongside DeBoer at Indiana in 2019, emphasized their strong friendship as a driving factor in his decision to join Alabama.
Reflecting on his time as a head coach, Wommack believes it will enhance his collaboration with DeBoer, making him a valuable asset to the program. He expressed eagerness to return to his role as a defensive play caller and contribute to the team’s success in the post-Nick Saban era.
