James Sunderland believes that the proposed amendments to the Rwanda rebel legislation go too far.
Primarily, I am a government member and serve as a Home Office PPS. It’s crucial for me to shepherd the bill through and support the government in this capacity. However, I also hold the view that the proposed amendments may be excessively extreme.
Pushing this bill forward is vital. The legislation is notably impactful, bold, and ambitious, representing one of the most significant pieces of legislation in many years, designed to deter the influx of boats. Yet, taking it a step further by potentially violating international law or denying individuals the right to appeal seems excessive to me.
We, as a collective of MPs, encompass diverse views, forming a broad church. While we stand united behind the Prime Minister, in this specific instance, the opinions of those on the right side of the party are also notably robust.
