Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is currently involved in contract negotiations with both Michigan and the NFL. According to reports, he recently interviewed with the Chargers and the Falcons while continuing discussions with Michigan. Amid these talks, there are unique conditions that Harbaugh is reportedly seeking as part of his next contract with the Wolverines.
As per a report from Yahoo! Sports, Harbaugh is seeking language in his contract that would provide him with immunity from termination related to any findings or sanctions stemming from ongoing NCAA investigations into the football program. This includes investigations involving sign-stealing and recruiting violations.
Additionally, Harbaugh is looking for a clause stipulating that any decision regarding a “for cause” termination would be decided by a three-member panel rather than the school’s athletic director.
Furthermore, he is reportedly considering delaying his new contract with Michigan so that NFL teams can pay a lower buyout to hire him away from the Wolverines. This would make it easier and less restrictive for NFL teams like the Chargers or Falcons to bring him on board.
Harbaugh currently has a lucrative offer from Michigan that would make him the highest-paid coach in the sport, with a deal worth $11.5 million annually over a six-year period.
In his nine seasons at Michigan, Harbaugh has amassed an 86-25 record, including a remarkable 40-3 stretch over the last three years. This period includes three victories over Ohio State, three Big Ten titles, and a national championship.
On a related note, Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye recently visited four-star offensive lineman Mason Short in Georgia. Short, who decommitted from Alabama, could potentially be a significant addition to Ohio State’s recruiting efforts.
