Manchester United has received the green light to finalize the acquisition of a £13 million-rated standout player, dealing an instant setback to their competitors.

Itakura’s existing deal with Borussia Monchengladbach is set to conclude in 2026, featuring a £13 million release clause.

Given Manchester United’s recurrent defensive vulnerabilities this season, there’s an urgent need to fortify the backline during the upcoming January transfer window. Meanwhile, Liverpool boasts the best defensive record in the Premier League, and Tottenham has already bolstered their defense by securing Radu Dragusin from Genoa this month.

In light of this situation, reports suggest that both Liverpool and Spurs are eyeing Itakura for a summer transfer, leaving Manchester United with a clear path to pursue and finalize his signing in the winter.

The 26-year-old played a crucial role in Japan’s success at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, contributing to victories over Spain and Germany to reach the Round of 16. In the match against Germany, he provided the assist for the decisive goal. In the ongoing season, Itakura has scored two goals in seven Bundesliga appearances for Monchengladbach but has been sidelined since sustaining an ankle injury in October last year.
