Browns Defensive Player Speaks Out Following Move to Vikings
Former Cleveland Browns cornerback AJ Green shared a message on Tuesday after signing a deal with the Minnesota Vikings. Green, who initially joined the Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2020, played in 34 games with two starts, contributing with two interceptions and special teams play. Although Green decided to sign a reserve/future deal with the Vikings, he left Cleveland on positive terms, expressing gratitude for the four years spent with the team and the relationships formed with fans, the front office, coaches, and players.
Cracking the cornerback depth chart in Cleveland is challenging, given the strong trio of cover men, including Greg Newsome, Martin Emerson Jr., and Pro Bowler Denzel Ward. The Browns also drafted Cameron Mitchell in the fifth round. Green now has an opportunity to secure a spot on the active roster in Minnesota and continue his NFL journey.
In addition to Green, wide receiver Austin Watkins, a promising talent who led the Browns in receiving yards during the preseason, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. Watkins became a fan favorite but felt he didn’t get a fair opportunity with the Browns, according to sources.
Safety Tanner McCalister also moved on, signing with the Denver Broncos. The Browns announced the signing of nine players to reserve/futures contracts, addressing various positions.
Looking ahead, the Browns face challenges in free agency, with key defensive players such as Jordan Elliott, Za’Darius Smith, Sione Takitaki, Anthony Walker, Maurice Hurst, and Shelby Harris set to become free agents. General Manager Andrew Berry acknowledges the inevitability of change in the NFL during the offseason and emphasizes the need to make decisions that improve the team. Despite potential changes, the Browns have cornerstones in Denzel Ward and Myles Garrett, and defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is expected to return after leading a significant turnaround for the defensive unit.
