Nathan Jones, the former Southampton manager known for his struggles in the Premier League, is set to join Charlton Athletic. The 50-year-old Welshman commenced his coaching journey at Charlton Athletic following a 21-year playing career spanning the English Football League. After retiring from playing, Jones initially served as an under-21 professional development coach at Charlton before moving to Brighton, where he embarked on his managerial career.
His success at Luton Town, guiding the team to promotion into the Championship in two separate spells, caught the attention of Southampton. Impressed by his ability to achieve success on a limited budget, Southampton appointed him as their permanent manager. However, things did not go well.
After his appointment on Nov. 10, 2022, Southampton only secured one victory in eight Premier League games under Nathan Jones, with the remaining seven matches ending in defeats. Despite reaching the League Cup semifinals, including a notable win against treble-winning Manchester City, Jones’s tenure at St. Mary’s Stadium lasted only three months.
