The Washington Commanders dismissed offensive coordinator Scott Turner following a disappointing 2022 season and brought in former Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy as his replacement.
Despite the anticipation and optimism surrounding Bieniemy’s arrival, Washington’s offense experienced a downturn in 2023. Although the overall statistics remained comparable, Bieniemy implemented a more pass-oriented strategy. The Commanders led the NFL in passing attempts and ranked second in sacks allowed.
This pass-heavy approach resulted in Washington finishing at the bottom in rushing attempts. Even with talented running backs like Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson, the team’s first-time starting quarterback, Sam Howell, had 23 fewer rushing attempts than the next closest team.
It’s important to note that the lack of rushing attempts wasn’t due to a shortage of talent in the backfield. Robinson had a notable season, rushing for 733 yards in 15 games, averaging 4.1 yards per attempt, and leading the team with five rushing touchdowns. Additionally, Robinson improved as a receiver, contributing 36 catches for 368 yards and four touchdowns.
