The Minnesota Vikings face a crucial decision regarding Kirk Cousins in the upcoming weeks, and the fate of wide receiver Justin Jefferson seems intertwined with the quarterback’s situation. According to a report by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network on February 13, Jefferson insists on knowing the team’s quarterback plans for the next season before committing to a long-term mega deal to stay with the Vikings.
While Jefferson has expressed strong support for Cousins, recent comments suggest he might consider playing with a different quarterback. Nevertheless, considering Jefferson’s remarkable performance in the league, where he achieved Pro Bowl recognition multiple times and received first-team All-Pro honors in 2022, it’s evident that the quarterback position holds significant importance even for a player of his caliber. Despite missing seven games last season due to injury, Jefferson still managed to amass 1,074 receiving yards and score 5 touchdowns.
The Vikings faced challenges after Cousins suffered an Achilles tear in Week 8, with varying degrees of success from backup quarterbacks. Jefferson’s recent comments indicate a firm stance on understanding the team’s
quarterback situation, but his priority remains securing a lucrative contract. Jefferson’s market value is projected at $29.3 million annually over a new four-year deal, likely exceeding $30 million annually, potentially setting a new standard for wide receiver contracts.
On the other hand, Cousins, expected to command a substantial salary, might fall in the range of $40-$45 million annually for a two-year deal. Despite his cost, Cousins has earned $185 million over six seasons in Minnesota, all fully guaranteed. Regardless of the quarterback outcome in 2024, Jefferson’s desire for a lucrative deal is seen as a positive development for the Vikings.
