Ipswich returned to the winning column with a commanding 4-0 victory over Millwall on Wednesday, reigniting their aspirations for promotion to the Premier League. Kieran McKenna’s team had experienced a downturn, winning only one of their previous nine league games and slipping to fourth in the standings behind the in-form Leeds and Southampton. However, their resounding win over Millwall brought them within three points of the automatic promotion spots.
Nathan Broadhead initiated the scoring and induced an own goal from Wes Harding. Bournemouth loanee Kieffer Moore added a third with a header early in the second half, and Ali Al-Hamadi sealed the victory with a stoppage-time penalty.
Former Manchester United assistant manager McKenna expressed satisfaction, stating, “I think we are long due a night like that, to be honest.” Despite statistical improvements in creating more shots and facing fewer against in the last nine games, Ipswich had faced challenges in translating those into victories. McKenna highlighted their clinical performance and effective defensive moments when needed.
The defeat pushes Millwall down to 21st in the table, just four points above the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Coventry reclaimed a playoff position with a 2-2 draw at Plymouth, thanks to Liam Kitching’s 95th-minute equalizer. On the other hand, Sunderland and Middlesbrough suffered setbacks in their aspirations for a top-six finish, facing defeats at Huddersfield and Preston, respectively.
