The Minnesota Vikings made headlines in 2018 by offering Kirk Cousins the NFL’s first fully guaranteed contract. However, the team seems reluctant to extend a similar guarantee to wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, discussing the ongoing contract talks on KFAN with Vikings announcer Paul Allen, commended Jefferson for his patience but raised concerns about the team’s approach.

Florio noted that the Vikings, unlike most teams, only fully guarantee the first year of contracts, except for Kirk Cousins. He emphasized that this policy is set by ownership and urged them to reconsider, stating that it’s not about the money but the contract structure. Jefferson, a key player with the potential to become the highest-paid non-quarterback, is seeking assurances beyond the first year.

While Jefferson is a supporter of Kirk Cousins, he wants clarity on the quarterback situation before committing to a long-term deal. The ongoing negotiations hit a snag in 2023, and the contract structure remains a crucial point of discussion.

On the other hand, Kirk Cousins, with three fully guaranteed contracts in six years, is exploring options for the upcoming season. Florio reported interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, emphasizing the team’s inclination to invest in a veteran quarterback rather than relying on a draft pick. Cousins’ camp is reportedly keeping an eye on potential offers from the Steelers and the Atlanta Falcons during the legal tampering window.
