The Minnesota Vikings made headlines in 2018 by offering Kirk Cousins the NFL’s first fully guaranteed contract, yet they seem hesitant to extend a similar deal to Justin Jefferson.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, speaking on KFAN with Vikings announcer Paul Allen, commended Jefferson for his patience during ongoing contract negotiations. However, Florio raised concerns over the negotiations, suggesting that the Vikings’ reluctance to offer more guarantees in Jefferson’s contract could test his patience.
Florio emphasized that the Vikings’ stance on guarantees stems from their ownership’s policies, urging them to reconsider and make an exception for Jefferson.
While Jefferson has the potential to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league, securing a contract with substantial guarantees might outweigh the advertised dollar amount.
In contrast, Cousins has secured three fully guaranteed contracts during his time with the Vikings and is exploring similar options this offseason, either with the Vikings or another team.
Regarding Jefferson’s contract, the structure is still being finalized following a near agreement before the 2023 season opener. However, an understanding of the team’s quarterback plans, particularly whether Cousins will continue, is crucial for Jefferson before signing a long-term deal.
Jefferson has expressed support for the Vikings retaining Cousins but remains open to other possibilities. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Jefferson wants clarity on the team’s quarterback situation before committing to a long-term contract.
As the NFL Scouting Combine approaches, Cousins’ representatives are keen to gauge his market, with teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers showing potential interest in acquiring his services during free agency.
