Over the past weekend, the St. John’s Prep Jazz Eagles journeyed to Philadelphia for a special performance at the National High School Jazz Competition. The jazz quintet participated in the first in-person edition of this event since the commencement of the pandemic, contending with over 50 ensembles from some of the most prestigious music programs across the nation.

Although the group did not secure a placement in the overall competition, Charlie Mitchell, the guitarist and a resident of Melrose, was honored with a Judges’ Choice Award and an Outstanding Jazz Musician Award. Reflecting on the experience, the 18-year-old senior expressed his surprise, stating, “I was really caught off-guard because the room was just full of people, and I heard so many great musicians that day.”
