On Wednesday, the Cincinnati Bengals parted ways with a quarterback who had won three National Championships. This move comes after the team signed multiple quarterbacks during the summer when Joe Burrow suffered an injury in training camp. Burrow’s season came to an end in November due to a ligament tear in his wrist, but he is optimistic about returning for the Bengals’ OTAs in the spring.
In preparation for Burrow’s anticipated return, the Bengals decided to open up a roster spot this offseason. According to information from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the team released AJ McCarron. McCarron was initially signed to the practice squad in September when Burrow faced a calf injury, and he joined the 53-man roster in December following Burrow’s season-ending injury.
McCarron made appearances in two games during the 2023 season, completing four of five passes for a total of 19 yards. This marked McCarron’s second stint with the Bengals, as the accomplished Alabama quarterback had previously spent his first four NFL seasons with the team after being selected in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
