Before the 2022 season, the Miami Dolphins acquired Tyreek Hill through a trade involving five draft picks and subsequently signed him to a lucrative four-year, $120 million contract. Since joining the team, Hill has quickly made an impact in South Florida, securing back-to-back First-Team All-Pro honors and finishing as the league leader in receiving yards in 2023.
In the previous season, Hill was targeted 171 times, and under the guidance of Mike McDaniel’s offense, he demonstrated remarkable efficiency. The eight-time Pro Bowler managed to average 15 yards per reception, catching 119 of his 170 targets in 2022.
While Justin Jefferson surpassed Hill in yards (1,809) and touchdowns (eight) in 2022, and Ceedee Lamb had the highest number of targets at 181, Pro Football Focus consistently graded Hill as the league’s top receiver for the past two seasons. Notably, PFF had identified different leading wide receivers in each of the seasons following Julio Jones in 2016-17.
In 2016, the Atlanta Falcons, led by Julio Jones, boasted the league’s highest-scoring offense with an average of 34 points per game. However, they experienced a significant drop to 15th place in 2017, averaging 21.6 points per game.
Hill’s addition proved to be a game-changer for the Dolphins, as their offense surged to the third rank, averaging 27.9 points per game in 2023. The team now faces the challenge of sustaining this momentum with Hill as the focal point, particularly given the upcoming season’s significant $31 million cap hit.
