On February 20, the Detroit Lions parted ways with safety Tracy Walker, marking the end of his tenure as one of the team’s longest-serving defensive players. According to a report by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions are releasing Walker to achieve approximately $5.5 million in cap space. Walker, drafted by the Lions as the 82nd overall pick in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft, has been with the organization throughout his entire six-season career.
Over his time with the Lions, Walker started 43 out of 79 games, accumulating 398 combined tackles, which included 16 tackles for loss and 7 quarterback hits. Additionally, he recorded 23 pass defenses, 4 sacks, 3 interceptions, and forced 2 fumbles. In the 2023 season, Walker started six games before transitioning to a special teams role in Week 14.
The decision to release Walker came shortly after NFL.com’s Matt Okada identified him in a list of potential NFC roster cut candidates.
