Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson of the Cowboys discloses concession from former Patriots coach Belichick.
Jimmy Johnson has shared intriguing insights into Bill Belichick’s future after his tenure with the New England Patriots. While Belichick remains tight-lipped about his post-Patriots career, the two-time Super Bowl champion coach, Johnson, sheds light on what might unfold, aiming to address common concerns regarding Belichick’s potential contributions to a new team.
In a recent radio interview, Johnson disclosed, “He said, ‘Hey, I don’t need to be in charge of everything.’ That’s what happened up in New England. He kind of fell into that deal, and it’s not necessarily that he pushed for it. That’s what happened because he was there for so long. But he’s more than willing to give up some of the personnel decisions to the general manager and the personnel people.”
Despite not officially holding the title, Belichick effectively operated as the general manager of the Patriots franchise alongside his role as head coach during his 24-year tenure. This arrangement has led to criticism, particularly for the state in which he left the Patriots’ roster. Belichick’s final decisions, such as drafting Mac Jones and allowing top receiver Jakobi Meyers to depart without much resistance, have posed challenges for the new regime led by Jerod Mayo as they strive to restore the Patriots to their former success on the field.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Belichick received only one interview for head coaching vacancies among the seven others available. The Atlanta Falcons granted him two interviews but ultimately chose Raheem Morris. Johnson expresses surprise at seeing Belichick still without a coaching position but believes that his willingness to concede certain responsibilities could work in his favor when the next coaching cycle begins.
