Potential Hurdle for Vikings in Re-Signing Veteran QB Kirk Cousins:
Kirk Cousins, poised to enter free agency, cannot be franchise-tagged, posing a significant quarterback dilemma for the Minnesota Vikings this offseason. Despite being 35 years old and recuperating from a torn Achilles, Cousins remains an appealing option for a new contract. Having spent six seasons with the Vikings, his return for the 2024 season remains uncertain.
Reported by Sports Illustrated, the Vikings harbor a strong affinity for Cousins; however, they are hesitant to offer him a fully-guaranteed deal akin to his previous contracts in Minnesota. In 2022, Cousins inked a one-year, $35 million fully-guaranteed extension extending through 2023, affording him the opportunity to explore free agency.
This offseason, Cousins is ineligible for franchise tagging, requiring Minnesota to contend with other potential suitors for his services. Spotrac projections suggest Cousins could command a three-year deal averaging $39.3 million annually, positioning him just outside the top 10 highest-paid quarterbacks.
Expressing his desire to be a loyal quarterback for a single team, Cousins adjusted his stance post his tenure in Washington, expressing openness to being a two-team quarterback. According to SI.com, discussions between the Vikings and Cousins’ representation commenced earlier this month, signifying ongoing dialogue.
Prior to his Achilles injury in Week 8, Cousins was enjoying a standout season, averaging 291.4 passing yards per game – his highest since 2016 – and registering 18 touchdowns against five interceptions. With a 50-37-1 record as Minnesota’s starter, he ranks third in all-time Vikings wins, third in passing yards (23,265), and second in passing touchdowns (171).
While Cousins may consider a hometown discount to continue playing in Minnesota alongside Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, he also has the opportunity to secure a lucrative contract with another team.
