Last year, Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day strategically brought in Joe Philbin as an offensive analyst to facilitate the transition from Brian Hartline to offensive coordinator. Although the outcome didn’t meet everyone’s expectations, the former NFL head coach swiftly returned to the professional league. On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Las Vegas Raiders had appointed Philbin as their senior offensive assistant.
This decision was evidently influenced by the hiring of Chip Kelly as the offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes. The necessity for a seasoned voice to assist with play-calling became apparent, making Philbin’s departure, while still significant, not as impactful as before.
The announcement by Ian Rapoport on Twitter confirmed the Raiders’ move to bring in Joe Philbin as their new senior offensive assistant. Having previously served as the offensive line coach for the Cowboys and as the senior analyst for Ohio State, Philbin’s return to the NFL is aimed at providing experience and support to Antonio Pierce.
Given his current career stage, Philbin may no longer be in consideration for head coaching roles, but his valuable presence in a coaching room is expected to benefit Antonio Pierce as he embarks on his first full season with the Raiders.
