The New Orleans Saints have initiated efforts to create salary cap space, despite the anticipated NFL announcement of a 2024 salary cap exceeding $240 million. Despite this, the Saints are projected to be approximately $80 million over the cap. While the team is skilled at managing cap space, contract restructuring alone won’t suffice.

In order to address the cap situation, the Saints will need to part ways with some players, potentially including core veterans. Taysom Hill, the versatile offensive player, has emerged as a candidate for departure. Hill is currently in the third season of a four-year, $40 million contract, with a 2024 cap hit of $15.789 million, surpassing stars like Travis Kelce and Christian McCaffrey. However, his actual salary for the year is $10 million.

To alleviate cap constraints, the Saints must find a team willing to trade for Taysom Hill and assume his contract. According to a recent piece by Kristopher Knox for Bleacher Report, the Denver Broncos are identified as the likely candidate. This is attributed to the presence of former Saints coaches, including Sean Payton and Pete Carmichael Jr., on the Broncos’ staff. Payton and Carmichael were instrumental in utilizing Hill’s unique skill set, making Denver a potential destination to recreate that dynamic.

In 2023, Hill showcased his versatility by rushing for 401 yards and four touchdowns, catching 33 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns, and completing 6-of-11 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. Despite his capabilities, the Saints, facing financial constraints, should consider parting ways. If a trade is to occur, it would need to take place after June 1 for New Orleans to maximize the financial benefits.
