The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced the release of former Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Mason Cole. According to the official statement from the Steelers, Cole served as the team’s starting center for the past two seasons (2022-23), participating in a total of 34 regular-season games, with 17 starts each season. Additionally, he started in the Steelers’ Wild Card playoff game in 2023.
Cole joined the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent during the 2022 offseason after spending one season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2021 and three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals from 2018 to 2020, who drafted him in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Notably, Cole was honored with ‘The Chief’ Award in 2022, named after Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr. The award is presented to a member of the Steelers organization who best embodies the spirit of cooperation with the media, reflecting the qualities demonstrated by Rooney.
The release of Cole allows the Pittsburgh Steelers to clear $4.75 million in cap space. Selected as the 97th overall pick by the Cardinals, Cole started all 16 games in his rookie season but saw reduced playing time in his sophomore year with only two starts across 16 games. In 2020, he started all 14 games he participated in before being traded to the Vikings ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.
