A pivotal force behind the Lions’ remarkable success was the strategic prowess of general manager Brad Holmes in assembling the impressive ’23 draft class. Noteworthy decisions unfolded in the first and second rounds, as Holmes chose to trade down from the 6th overall pick. Subsequently, he secured running back Jahmyr Gibbs at No. 12 and off-ball linebacker Jack Campbell at No. 18. Adding to the draft masterstroke, Holmes acquired tight end Sam LaPorta at No. 34, utilizing an extra pick gained from trading down from the No. 6 spot. The roster was further fortified with the selection of defensive back Brian Branch at No. 45.

Despite initial skepticism surrounding these picks, particularly concerning perceived positional value, Holmes’s choices proved to be immensely successful. Gibbs and LaPorta both earned Pro Bowl honors in their inaugural seasons, with Branch leaving a lasting impact in the Lions’ secondary. While Campbell may not have commanded as much attention, he demonstrated glimpses of evolving into a crucial asset for the team’s linebacking corps.

The Lions currently stand on the brink of solidifying their status as perennial Super Bowl contenders. Steve Palazzolo from Pro Football Focus commended the Lions’ strategic approach, underlining the importance of sustaining their successful drafting strategy. Palazzolo emphasized that, despite the team’s previous surplus in draft capital, they now face the challenge of making strategic selections with fewer picks to ensure the continuity of their success.
