Georgia has filled its vacant running backs coach position with the appointment of Josh Crawford, who previously served as the wide receivers coach at Georgia Tech. Crawford brings a wealth of experience to the role, having been deeply involved in the state’s recruiting scene as a long-time high school coach before transitioning to the collegiate level.
The need for a running backs coach arose when the head coaching position at Georgia State became available following Shawn Elliot’s decision to join South Carolina as their tight ends coach. This prompted discussions about potential candidates for the role at Georgia State, ultimately leading to the hiring of McGee. With McGee officially on board, Georgia found itself without a running backs coach.
McGee has been part of the Georgia football program since 2016, joining when Kirby Smart was initially hired. His tenure includes three seasons as the Bulldogs’ running backs coach, followed by a promotion to assistant head coach. In 2019, he assumed the role of run game coordinator, a position he has held since. Before his time in Athens, McGee contributed to football programs at Auburn and Georgia Southern, initially making his mark in the Georgia high school football landscape. The coaching shuffle was completed by the announcement that Crawford would take over as Georgia’s next running backs coach by Sunday evening.
