In a recent media session with the Nashville press, Titans’ new head coach Brian Callahan discussed the ongoing debate between prioritizing the offensive line versus wide receivers. He referred to the strategic decision the Bengals made a couple of years ago when choosing between Ja’Marr Chase and Penei Sewell in the 2021 draft, ultimately selecting the wide receiver.
Callahan hinted at a similar mindset for the Titans in the upcoming draft, emphasizing the importance of scoring points in the NFL. He noted that players capable of scoring touchdowns tend to have a significant impact. This perspective aligns with the broader theme from the Titans’ leadership, expressing a strong desire to enhance the wide receiver position.
Previously, the seventh overall pick was often projected to address the left tackle position, considering the Titans’ struggles since Taylor Lewan’s departure. Despite the pressing need for improvement on the offensive line, there is now a growing emphasis on bolstering the receiving corps, especially given the underwhelming performance of Treylon Burks, drafted as A.J. Brown’s successor.
While protecting quarterback Will Levis is crucial – he faced high pressure rates in the previous season – there is also a recognized need for additional offensive weapons. Callahan and general manager Ran Carthon have underscored the importance of providing Levis with more playmakers.
Prospects like Rome Odunze from Washington and Malik Nabers from LSU might become key considerations for the Titans in the upcoming draft. Carthon emphasized the perpetual search for premier wide receivers, recognizing the necessity of adding playmakers to support Levis.
Callahan, drawing from his experience with Cincinnati’s successful wide-receiving trio, stressed the importance of diversity in the receiver group – combining speed, strength, and various skill sets. He expressed the desire to enhance team speed and explosiveness, crucial attributes in challenging opposing defenses.
However, Callahan clarified that elite talent cannot be easily replaced. Despite the emphasis on wide receivers, it doesn’t necessarily mean the Titans will prioritize them over other positions of need with the seventh overall pick. Carthon highlighted the depth in both receiver and offensive line talent in the draft, impacting decisions not only in the early rounds but also in later rounds and free agency.
Callahan acknowledged the Titans’ significant room for improvement in both wide receiver and offensive line positions, indicating a long road ahead to achieve excellence in both areas.
