Just over 24 hours before North Carolina’s season opener, standout wide receiver Tez Walker remains ineligible, confirmed by a source close to the situation. UNC head coach Mack Brown expressed frustration with the NCAA, stating that despite the institution’s efforts to review Walker’s case, the lack of clarification from the NCAA has left them in a difficult position. Brown criticized the NCAA for not considering mental health, COVID, and rule changes affecting Walker’s journey. Despite no movement from the NCAA for an appeal hearing, the school anticipates a committee review next week.

Walker addressed NCAA president Charlie Baker in a letter, questioning the logic behind the NCAA’s decision. He highlighted the inconsistency in the NCAA’s reasoning, particularly regarding his time at NCCU, where the football season was canceled due to COVID. Walker urged Baker to review his situation and emphasized the NCAA’s role in helping student-athletes achieve their dreams.

Without NCAA Tournament Invite, UNC Turns Down NIT

Walker, an All-MAC honoree at Kent State, transferred to UNC to play for his dream school and be closer to family, especially his ailing grandmother. UNC submitted an appeal after Walker’s waiver was denied, stating that he enrolled in classes before the NCAA imposed immediate eligibility restrictions on two-time transfers. The uncertainty has forced the team to prepare with and without Walker, complicating game plans. Walker released a statement in August expressing the emotional toll of the situation, turning what should be a joyful time into a stressful experience for him and his family.
