Gasso describes the opening of Love’s Field as a “historic day” for OU softball.

As Patty Gasso, the head coach of Oklahoma, addressed the assembly in front of the new 44,000-square-foot softball facility named Love’s Field, her emotions were evident, struggling to hold back tears. The opening ceremony on Friday morning brought together players (past and present), school administrators, and a multitude of fans. Along Jenkins Ave, some passing fans expressed their enthusiasm by honking horns and shouting “Boomer!” at the crowd.

Gasso described the day as a “historic day in OU softball history,” emphasizing that the new softball facility represents more than just a landmark moment for the program. For the seven-time national-championship-winning coach, it serves as an example of the potential of women’s athletics nationwide.

Having witnessed firsthand how fan and donor support can shape a program, Gasso emphasized that Love’s Field is breaking barriers for women’s softball and all women’s athletic programs, encouraging companies and donors to invest in women’s athletics.

Recalling the early days when the Sooners played at Reaves Park, Gasso highlighted the challenges they faced, from sharing the field with a slow-pitch softball league to a cramped dugout during regional hosting. In their 26 seasons at Marita Hynes Field, the Sooners achieved remarkable success, but the demand for a new stadium, driven by the fans, led to the creation of the largest on-campus softball facility in the country.

While the new complex serves as a valuable recruiting tool, Gasso hopes it inspires other coaches, school administrators, and donors. She emphasized the significance of being role models for young girls, preparing for the future and leading the next generation into elite athletic programs and facilities.

Although the stadium’s completion is expected in mid-April, the Sooners will host all 20 of their home games at Love’s Field. A statue dedicated to Coach Gasso will eventually grace the area, symbolizing the commitment to creating a softball stadium befitting the gold standard in athletics, as stated by OU athletic director Joe Castiglione.
