The Washington Commanders have decided to part ways with veteran tight end Logan Thomas ahead of the upcoming NFL free agency period. The move was initially reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, who highlighted Thomas’s 2024 earnings of $6.54 million and an impending $500,000 roster bonus scheduled for later in the month.
Thomas’ release, alongside offensive lineman Charles Leno, results in a significant cap saving of approximately $13.8 million for Washington. Additional reports by Adam Schefter of ESPN indicated that center Nick Gates would also be released at the beginning of the new league year in mid-March. The Commanders are expected to have around $90 million in cap space heading into free agency, according to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports.
The 32-year-old Thomas, an eight-year NFL veteran, spent the past four seasons with Washington, experiencing notable success. His standout year was in 2020 when he set career highs with 72 receptions, 670 yards, and six touchdowns. Injuries limited his participation to six games in 2021, and in 2022, he recorded 39 catches for 323 yards and one touchdown in 14 games.
During the last season, Thomas demonstrated good chemistry with quarterback Sam Howell, producing the second-best season of his career with 55 receptions for 496 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games. Thomas initially played as a quarterback at Virginia Tech, earning All-ACC Second Team honors in 2011.
