SO DEVASTETING: Detroit lions call the re-signing of their key star player Zylstra….
Zylstra became a part of the Lions in 2021, dividing his time between the practice squad and the active roster. Over the initial two seasons in Detroit, he participated in 17 games, starting two, but missed the entire 2023 season due to a knee injury sustained in training camp.
Coach Dan Campbell, in August, acknowledged Zylstra’s significant contribution to the team’s success the previous year, especially as they turned the corner. Describing him as a hardworking and dedicated player, Campbell praised Zylstra’s commitment to excellence.
With Zylstra making a return, the Lions’ tight end roster now includes three players: Zylstra, All-Pro Sam LaPorta, and James Mitchell. Brock Wright, who was part of the active roster last season, is currently a restricted free agent, while Anthony Firkser is set to become an unrestricted free agent.
While the Lions could opt to enter training camp with the existing trio of tight ends, there seems to be interest in retaining Wright, and there’s a possibility of exploring additional depth or competition through free agency or the NFL Draft.
It’s worth noting that Zylstra, originally an exclusive rights free agent (ERFA), was re-signed under a traditional contract rather than using the tender. This could be a strategic move by the Lions to structure his contract differently, incorporating elements like a signing bonus, guarantees, and/or incentives. Alternatively, the change from ERFA status might have occurred for other reasons, possibly at the player’s request.
