The buzz surrounding Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean in the first round persists. In Jordan Reid’s recent ESPN mock draft, DeJean is projected to be chosen by the Green Bay Packers at the 25th pick.
The team faces significant gaps at nickel corner and safety, but DeJean presents a versatile solution. Despite being my top-ranked safety, he showcases his skills across the entire defensive spectrum. His exceptional instincts and agility have translated into seven interceptions over the last two seasons, including three pick-sixes.
This would be a significant boost for the Packers, who struggled with only seven interceptions in 2023, ranking 31st in the NFL. Even if they decide to re-sign Keisean Nixon, DeJean can seamlessly fill roles at nickel or safety, and he’s even capable of contributing as a kick returner. Although DeJean is recovering from a broken leg, he has assured that he will conduct workouts for teams before the draft, as per Reid’s report on ESPN.
Given that the Packers’ last first-round pick came from Iowa, there’s a compelling case for back-to-back selections from the state.

On the defensive front, however, there’s room for improvement. The secondary, in particular, has struggled, even from the perspective of an Eagles fan. Jaire Alexander had an unusual year, and his supporting cast didn’t meet expectations.
While Eric Stokes displayed potential in his rookie season, injuries and inconsistent performances have been challenges. Green Bay is likely in the market for new talent at safety, even if they choose to retain Alexander and Stokes. The urgency for assistance in the secondary is where DeJean’s value becomes apparent.
