Thompson, hailing from the vicinity of the program, initially showcased his quarterback skills at Southmoore High School. However, his collegiate journey didn’t commence at Oklahoma; instead, he spent the first three years at Texas before transferring to Nebraska in 2022. In the previous season, Thompson donned the jersey for Florida Atlantic, but an ACL injury restricted his participation to just three games.
As his sixth season concluded, Thompson contemplated whether he would return for one final college football season. However, a few days after the Sooners’ appearance in the Alamo Bowl, a significant development unfolded when he received a call from the new OU offensive coordinator, Seth Littrell.
“Right after the bowl game is when I started to have heavy contact with the coaching staff,” Thompson recounted on Wednesday. “I was already in the portal for a few weeks, and so we went through the process the right way. I just remember I got a phone call when I was at home and right before I went out to eat with my family. We were all excited about it. This was around the holidays, and once I knew I was most likely gonna be coming here we celebrated, and I got to enjoy the holidays with my family for a little bit.
“Just talking to (Littrell) was good to hear. And then I connected with (OU coach Brent Venables) after that. It wasn’t a whole lot of back and forth or working through the process. It was more so, hey, we’re interested.”
Oklahoma had always been in Thompson’s sights. His father, Charles, played under the legendary OU coach Barry Switzer in the ’80s, and his brother, Kendall, also donned the Sooner jersey. His affinity for the program was longstanding.
So, when the opportunity materialized, Thompson wasted little time making the decision to join the Sooners.
“For me, it was, ‘I wanna be at OU. I wanna be at Oklahoma.’ They’re like, ‘OK, let us work through this process,'” Thompson said.
