New England Patriots to trade QB Mac Jones; receiving a Huge interest.
Mac Jones’ turbulent three-year stint with the Patriots seems to be reaching its conclusion.
New England is reportedly open to the idea of trading Jones and has been fielding inquiries from teams interested in acquiring the quarterback, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Teams have been actively assessing Jones, conducting thorough evaluations on the quarterback.
Jones started his career on a positive note, guiding the Patriots to the playoffs in his rookie season with 3,801 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. Despite an early postseason exit, there was optimism about the team’s future with Jones at the helm.
However, Jones struggled in the subsequent two seasons, displaying a significant regression. He often attempted to single-handedly lift the Patriots out of offensive challenges, leading to critical errors. Head coach Bill Belichick, frustrated with Jones’ mistakes, benched the former 15th-overall pick in favor of Bailey Zappe on four occasions in 2023. By the end of the season, uncertainty loomed over Jones’ future with the team.
Now under the leadership of new head coach Jerod Mayo and with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt acknowledging that “everything is on the table” at the quarterback position, a fresh start appears to be the best option for both Jones and the Patriots. While Jones can point to his promising rookie tape, he needs to demonstrate that he can overcome the struggles witnessed in the past two seasons.
Amidst the annual quarterback carousel, Jones may soon find himself a part of it. The destination remains uncertain, but based on the tone of the recent report, a continued stay in New England seems increasingly unlikely.
