The Baltimore Ravens have inked a four-year contract extension worth $98 million with defensive tackle Justin Madubuike.

There’s no necessity for the franchise tag on Justin Madubuike.

The Baltimore Ravens and the emerging defensive standout have reached an agreement on a significant four-year extension worth $98 million, according to a report by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Friday. Rapoport also detailed that the deal encompasses $75.5 million in guarantees, with $53.5 million guaranteed at the signing.

The team subsequently confirmed the extension.

Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta expressed his satisfaction, stating in a team-released statement, “We are pleased to announce a four-year extension with Justin Madubuike. Justin is one of the best defensive tackles in the entire NFL and a cornerstone on our defense. We are thrilled for Justin and his family and equally happy for our fanbase. This is a great way to start the new league year!”

Although the Ravens initially applied the franchise tag to Madubuike earlier in the week, it served as a temporary measure as Baltimore committed to securing the services of the first-time Pro Bowler for an extended period. With a total value of $98 million, this deal ranks highest among interior defensive linemen, as per Over the Cap. Madubuike’s average annual value of $24.5 million surpasses Quinnen Williams of the New York Jets, securing the second spot among interior defensive linemen, with only Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams ahead at $31.66 million per season.

The significant contract extension follows Madubuike’s breakout 2023 season after three consistent years with the Ravens, who selected him in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old defensive tackle led all players in his position with an impressive 13 sacks and matched the league’s single-season record by registering at least half a sack in 11 consecutive games. He also achieved career highs in tackles (56), tackles for loss (12), quarterback hits (33), and forced fumbles (2).

During his inaugural Pro Bowl appearance in Orlando, Florida, in February, Madubuike expressed his attachment to Baltimore, labeling it as “home.” However, he acknowledged the business aspect, emphasizing that it would take care of itself. True to his words, the extension represents a substantial commitment from both Madubuike and the Ravens.
