Cydney Sanders had an impressive weekend as the Sooners swept Iowa State.
The Oklahoma Sooners made a strong start to Big 12 play, securing victories in all three games against the Iowa State Cyclones with scores of 4-0, 11-2, and 14-1.
The standout performer of the weekend was first baseman Cydney Sanders, who delivered an outstanding performance, hitting four home runs and tallying nine RBIs. Sanders shared her thoughts with reporters after the Saturday doubleheader, reflecting on her impressive day.
“Just seeing a strike and swinging,” Sanders remarked. “Honestly, in my last at-bat, I told coach I was going to swing at my first-pitch strike. I ended up not, but it ended up working out in the end. Just seeing pitches and getting good swings on them.”
Sanders’ breakout day had been eagerly anticipated since her transfer before the previous season. As a freshman, she achieved remarkable numbers, hitting 21 home runs and recording 63 RBIs for Arizona State. In her debut season with the Sooners, she notched nine home runs and 31 RBIs, with her batting average dropping from .425 to .284.
This season, Sanders has demonstrated significant improvement, boasting a batting average of .385, along with eight home runs and 20 RBIs. If she maintains this level of performance, she is on track for approximately 20 home runs and 46 RBIs. In March alone, she has contributed six home runs and 15 RBIs, and it’s only March 10.
Having this version of Cydney Sanders in the lineup could significantly boost Oklahoma’s chances of securing a fourth consecutive national title.
