Rumors suggest that the Green Bay Packers are set to sign Raiders’ running back Josh Jacobs to a contract in the upcoming NFL free agency.
Josh Jacobs is on the move, and his destination is creating quite a buzz.
The former Las Vegas Raiders’ running back has reportedly reached an agreement to join the Green Bay Packers, as disclosed by Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Green Bay, already engaged in negotiations with Aaron Jones for a new deal, was actively seeking a running back. The acquisition of Jacobs adds a significant talent to their roster.
This move marks a shift for Jacobs, who missed out on the desired contract in 2023 when the Raiders placed the franchise tag on him. Although Jacobs did not sign the tag initially and held out at the beginning of training camp, he eventually agreed to a one-year, $11.8 million deal in August, resolving the dispute.
Throughout his NFL career, the 26-year-old running back has consistently surpassed 800 rushing yards in each of his five seasons. His standout year was in 2022, leading the league with 1,653 rushing yards and contributing 12 touchdowns. The 2023 season, however, saw a dip in performance, with 805 yards and six scores in 13 games, coupled with 37 catches for 296 yards.
Injuries played a role in limiting Jacobs’ output, missing four games during the season. His performance also varied under different coaching regimes, notably excelling under interim head coach Antonio Pierce after Josh McDaniels was dismissed in early November.
Upon entering free agency, Jacobs became part of a loaded class featuring names like Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, Tony Pollard, and Austin Ekeler. Given his youth, consistent health, and past success as a feature back, Jacobs emerged as a top option in free agency.
The Packers, unexpected contenders for Jacobs, are banking on him being a key asset in their backfield for the coming years, adding a surprising twist with the presence of Aaron Jones. Nonetheless, the move is expected to provide quarterback Jordan Love with an additional offensive weapon, and it marks a notable signing in this year’s free agency class.
