Expected to select a quarterback with the second overall pick in this year’s draft, the Commanders are making a surprising move by bringing in a seasoned player. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota is set to sign a one-year deal with Washington worth $6 million initially, potentially rising to $10 million.

This deal continues Mariota’s journeyman career, as Washington will mark his fourth team in as many years. Following his tenure as the Titans’ starter, Mariota spent two years with the Raiders before brief stints in Atlanta and Philadelphia. His time in Atlanta ended abruptly due to knee surgery, leading to a one-year deal with the Eagles where his playing time was limited. Despite this, Mariota’s new contract with Washington offers more upfront money and higher potential earnings.

Washington Commanders: 53-man roster projection after 2nd exhibition

Washington currently has Sam Howell on their roster, having drafted him from North Carolina in 2022. Howell initially showed promise as the starting quarterback in 2023 but struggled towards the end of the season. With new management in place, there have been discussions of trading Howell, especially with the anticipation of drafting Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels in April.

The addition of Mariota raises speculation about Howell’s future with the team. Although several teams have already filled their backup quarterback positions, Howell’s two remaining years on his rookie contract could still attract interest from teams seeking a developmental option. Meanwhile, Mariota aims to secure the backup role in Washington and potentially see early playing time in the upcoming season.
