The San Francisco 49ers have bolstered their special teams unit with a new signing.
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Chase Lucas has inked a one-year deal with the 49ers.
While Lucas is officially listed as a cornerback, he did not see any defensive snaps last season. However, he played a significant role on special teams, participating in 230 plays. Notably, he excelled as the punt gunner for the Detroit Lions. The Lions opted not to retain him in free agency, shortly after awarding Jalen Reeves-Maybin the highest salary for a core special teams player in the NFL. This decision suggests that Detroit believed they had invested sufficiently in pure special teams players.
Now, the 49ers have made their own investment, expecting Lucas to make a significant impact on their kicking game in the upcoming season.
