Kenny Pickett, who recently joined the Philadelphia Eagles as their quarterback, expressed confidence in his decision to leave the Steelers despite ongoing reports.
After a turbulent exit from Pittsburgh, Kenny Pickett is looking forward to a fresh start in Philadelphia following his trade.
Pickett shared his positive outlook on Monday, stating, “I see this as a beneficial fresh start. Joining this team and quarterback group with some exceptional individuals, I’m committed to supporting them in any capacity and staying prepared for my chance whenever it arises. My focus is on making a positive impact on this team.”
Last Friday, Pickett was traded to Philadelphia by the Steelers in exchange for picks.
Amidst the trade, there were reports suggesting dissatisfaction from the 25-year-old quarterback regarding the signing of Russell Wilson, which allegedly led to his move across Pennsylvania.
Dismissing these reports on Monday, Pickett expressed his excitement for his future with the Eagles.
Addressing the reports, he said, “I stand by my decisions and how I handled the situation, which happened behind closed doors. I’m thrilled to be here in Philly. Coming here feels like the perfect fit, and I believe everything happens as it should. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.”
Pickett’s challenges began after he suffered an ankle injury last season, requiring surgery. Upon his recovery, instead of reinstating him as the starting quarterback, the Steelers opted to stick with Mason Rudolph.
Reports emerged that Pickett declined to serve as the emergency third quarterback in the Steelers’ Week 17 game in Seattle.
Responding to the report, Pickett said, “I believe there were misunderstandings behind closed doors that led to misinterpretations in the public. There was a pre-existing plan for that game, which unfolded as planned throughout the week. Considering my recent ankle surgery, the situation was as it was. Nonetheless, I’m genuinely happy to be here.”
Selected as the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Pickett’s time in Pittsburgh is seen as lacking both on and off the field.
Reflecting on his experiences, he remarked, “Challenges often provide deeper insights than successes. I’m focusing on getting back to what I love, playing the game with passion. I’m excited about the camaraderie within this team and coaching staff.”
In Philadelphia, Pickett begins the offseason as Jalen Hurts’ backup. Given the minimal cost of acquiring him, there’s no guarantee he’ll retain the backup position.
