According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Los Angeles Dodgers are nearing the finalization of a contract extension with catcher Will Smith, worth $140 million over 10 years. Juan C. Toribio of MLB.com initially reported on the extension discussions between the Dodgers and Smith, who was slated to become a free agent after the 2025 season. Toribio and Mark Feinsand of MLB.com also mentioned that the contract includes “some deferred money.”
Smith, currently 28 years old, has spent his entire six-year MLB career with the Dodgers. In the previous season, he achieved 19 home runs, 76 RBI, a .261 batting average, and an .797 OPS. Smith’s performance earned him his first selection to the National League All-Star team.
According to Baseball Reference, Smith maintains an average of 30 home runs and 103 RBI per 162 games. He holds a lifetime batting average of .263 with an .842 OPS.
Upon the deal’s confirmation, the Dodgers will have four players under contracts spanning at least 10 seasons, as per Spotrac. These include two-way star Shohei Ohtani (10 years, $700 million), pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto (12 years, $375 million), and shortstop Mookie Betts (12 years, $365 million).
