Nonito Donaire anticipates that Michael Zerafa will emerge victorious against both Erislandy Lara and Tim Tszyu.

According to his new coach Nonito Donaire, the only thing preventing Michael Zerafa (31-4, 19 KOs) from reaching his full potential is self-belief. Donaire, who has been preparing the 32-year-old Australian for his upcoming world title bout against WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday night, shared his perspective.

The fight is scheduled to be part of the undercard for the WBO and WBC 154-pound title clash between Tim Tszyu (24-0, 17 KOs) and Sebastian Fundora (20-1-1, 13 KOs). Donaire traveled to Australia to train Zerafa for the first time and emphasized the importance of bolstering both Zerafa’s skill set and mindset.

“I’m bringing out the best in Michael, not just in terms of his abilities, but also in his mindset,” Donaire explained to Fox Sports Australia. “I believe that’s the key difference this weekend – you have a Michael Zerafa who is fully prepared.”

Donaire elaborated on Zerafa’s mental state, noting the presence of occasional uncertainties. “Fighters often grapple with numerous thoughts, and while Michael may not vocalize it, I sense there’s occasional uncertainty,” Donaire added. “My role has been to instill confidence in him because Michael undeniably possesses both the skills and the heart necessary for success.”

The addition of Donaire to his corner has evidently boosted Zerafa’s confidence, as he confidently declared, “Saturday night will culminate with me as the new WBA world champion. Mark my words.” Zerafa also expressed hope for a victorious return to Australia, aiming to bring home three world titles – one for himself and two for Tszyu.

Cuban southpaw Lara, however, is poised to defend his title fiercely. “I’m ready to give everyone a great fight. The time for talking is over,” Lara asserted. “I’ll prove my worth inside the ring, and Zerafa will witness it on Saturday night. I’m excited and feel strong.”

Zerafa, eyeing a potential showdown with Tszyu following a win over Lara, has been vocal about his readiness for the challenge. Donaire shares Zerafa’s confidence, emphasizing his belief in Zerafa’s abilities. “When Michael is mentally focused, nothing can hinder him,” Donaire affirmed. “I’ve witnessed firsthand what he’s capable of, and when his mindset is dialed in, he’s unstoppable. In that fight, I’m standing firmly in support of my fighter.”
