The Raiders and Vikings are considering trading up into the top three picks to secure a “franchise quarterback.”

As the NFL Draft approaches within a month, teams seeking to adjust their draft positions will inevitably find themselves entangled in the rumor mill. This year’s draft class boasts a plethora of top-tier quarterbacks, fueling speculation as the event draws nearer. Among the teams eyeing significant moves are the Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders, both with pressing quarterback needs, aspiring to secure positions within the top three picks.

Despite acquiring veteran Sam Darnold to helm the quarterback position following the departure of Kirk Cousins, the Vikings envision Darnold more as a transitional figure rather than a foundational cornerstone for General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Head Coach Kevin O’Connell to build around.

Meanwhile, the Raiders possess second-year quarterback Aidan O’Connell and recently added Gardner Minshew during free agency. Although Minshew showcased promise as the backup for the Indianapolis Colts, it’s uncertain if he possesses the longevity to serve as the Raiders’ long-term solution under Head Coach Antonio Pierce in the upcoming 2024 season.

With the top four spots potentially seeing quarterbacks selected, the likelihood is high that the Chicago Bears will opt for Caleb Williams from USC with the No. 1 pick. Having traded former starter Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier in the offseason, the Bears are in dire need of a franchise quarterback. The anticipation surrounding Williams’ selection by the Bears appears unwavering leading up to the draft.

Following Williams, Jayden Daniels from LSU and Drake Maye from North Carolina emerge as the next probable quarterback prospects. The Washington Commanders, facing a significant void at the position, could potentially target either candidate. Similarly, the New England Patriots, having dispatched former quarterback Mac Jones to Jacksonville, are also on the hunt for a legitimate quarterback prospect. If the Commanders opt for Daniels, Maye could be their favored alternative.

With the Arizona Cardinals holding the No. 4 pick, it seems likely they will retain quarterback Kyler Murray. Consequently, their draft pick becomes a tantalizing prospect for teams in need of an elite quarterback.

In the scenario where Williams, Daniels, and Maye are already selected, J.J. McCarthy from Michigan emerges as the next viable quarterback option. Both the Vikings and Raiders might contemplate trading into this spot to secure McCarthy, though their primary interest could potentially lean towards Daniels.
