Ex-Tar Heel player moves to College of Charleston with Chris Mack.
Although the NCAA Tournament is still fresh in our memories, the transfer portal activity gives the impression that we’re already well into the college basketball offseason.
The most prominent figure to enter the transfer portal thus far is Oumar Ballo, a dominant center from Arizona who has quickly risen to prominence after transferring from Gonzaga. Other players, such as Aaron Bradshaw from Kentucky, are seeking more consistent starting opportunities elsewhere.
Additionally, there have been notable coaching changes, including Eric Musselman’s move from Arkansas to USC, John Calipari’s transition from Kentucky to Arkansas, and Chris Mack’s departure from College of Charleston. Pat Kelsey, the former Charleston coach, is now taking the reins at Louisville.
However, what might be less known is that one of these new coaches has a connection to the University of North Carolina.
Chris Mack, the former Louisville and longtime Xavier coach, has recently brought on former Tar Heels player Jeff McInnis as an assistant coach. McInnis, who played college basketball at North Carolina from 1993 to 1996, was part of the 1995 Final Four team and helped lead UNC to a pair of Second Round appearances. He played alongside legendary Tar Heels such as Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace before enjoying an 11-year NBA career, concluding with a stint with the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets).
While Charleston marks McInnis’s first coaching role at the college level, he is recognized for founding the AAU program Team Charlotte in North Carolina. Prior to his current position, he spent the years 2019 to 2022 at Combine Academy in Lincolnton, NC.
