Jared Goff of the Lions criticizes the Detroit media, alleging that they sometimes delight in negativity.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff recently shared his perspective on the local media, suggesting that they often lean toward negativity unnecessarily.

During an appearance on Willbo’s Trading Cards podcast, Goff remarked, “I have this feeling about our local media where they almost seem to revel in negativity sometimes. Perhaps it’s what garners attention and sells, but it’s not necessary.”

He continued, expressing his frustration, “We have a talented team and have achieved success. We should acknowledge and celebrate that instead of constantly focusing on being the underdog. We’ve won the division and teams will be aiming for us now. It’s just the chip on my shoulder and the competitor in me.”

Goff, 29, is entering his fourth season with the Lions and has witnessed significant progress within the organization. From a 3-13-1 record in 2021 to narrowly missing the playoffs in 2022 with a 9-8 record, to winning the NFC North and advancing to the NFC Championship Game with a 12-5 record last season, the Lions have made substantial strides.

Despite their achievements, Goff recalled instances where the media seemed fixated on highlighting the team’s shortcomings, such as comparing their talent level unfavorably to opponents like the San Francisco 49ers.

Reflecting on such encounters, Goff emphasized, “We have exceptional talent on our roster, and it’s disheartening when our own beat reporters seem to overlook that. We’ve got standout players like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell, yet the focus often shifts elsewhere.”

Although the Lions fell short in their NFC Championship Game against the 49ers, Goff believes they have the pieces in place to make another deep playoff run in 2024 and pose a significant threat to their rivals’ aspirations.
