Iowa plans to retire Caitlin Clark’s number 22 jersey.
The announcement was made during Iowa’s end-of-season celebration ceremony, following shortly after the conclusion of her illustrious NCAA career.
As the all-time leading scorer in college basketball, she amassed an impressive total of 3,951 points and maintained remarkable averages of 28.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 8.2 assists.
At the age of 22, she is poised to transition to the WNBA, with projections placing her as the top pick in the upcoming draft.
Addressing the fans post-announcement, she expressed gratitude, stating, “You’ve all inspired me as much as I inspired you… this place will always be home to me.”
Although her collegiate journey concluded without securing a national championship, she garnered significant individual recognition, earning prestigious honors such as the Naismith National Player of the Year and the Wooden Award for two consecutive seasons.
Her impact on women’s college basketball was evident, with the championship game drawing in a viewership of 18.9 million, surpassing that of the men’s final.
The Indiana Fever possess the coveted number one pick in the upcoming WNBA Draft and are anticipated to select her as their top choice.
Her influence extends beyond collegiate play, evident in the increased national broadcasting of the Fever’s games compared to the previous season.
The WNBA Draft is scheduled for Monday, April 15th, at 7:30 PM Eastern time (12:30 AM BST).
