The opening of the spring transfer portal window this week has heightened anxiety among Michigan football fans, and rightfully so. However, this apprehension is not unique to them; college football enthusiasts nationwide share concerns about the potential loss of their top players to poaching. Despite this, I don’t anticipate a tumultuous situation unfolding. Specifically, I don’t foresee a mass departure of players from Michigan football.
While circumstances can shift unexpectedly, it would come as a surprise to me if any of Michigan’s standout players opt to enter the transfer portal this week. Additionally, I find it intriguing to monitor potential additions to Michigan football through the transfer portal, with one plausible candidate being former Wolverine Nikhai Hill-Green. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 225 pounds, Hill-Green contributed significantly to the Wolverines in 2021, tallying 50 tackles and two tackles for loss across 13 games.
However, his 2022 season was marred by injury, leading to no appearances for Michigan football. Subsequently, he transferred to Charlotte, following Biff Poggi last offseason. During his tenure at Charlotte, Hill-Green showcased his prowess, participating in 11 games and amassing impressive statistics: 73 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks, and three pass breakups. Notably, he ranked ninth in solo tackles in the American Athletic Conference.
Despite initially committing to UCF, Hill-Green has since reconsidered, and reports indicate he’s been spotted training in Ann Arbor, as noted by Chris Balas of The Wolverine. Currently in the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, his potential return to Michigan football adds an intriguing dimension to the team’s offseason narrative.
