The Arkansas Special Teams transfer may not be as surprising as initially believed.
The departure of punter Max Fletcher might initially cause concern for Arkansas Razorbacks fans regarding the special teams situation. However, this move could potentially alter the outlook of the upcoming season.
Fletcher, after a challenging adjustment period in his first season in the United States and with American football, emerged as one of the nation’s top punters last season. Expected to lead the position group following Cam Little’s departure to the NFL, Fletcher’s move to the transfer portal raises apprehensions. It not only removes a dependable player from the team but also appears to necessitate delving into the transfer portal to find a new punter, diverting attention from addressing depth in other positions apart from quarterback and tight end.
Nevertheless, there might be a silver lining. Backup punter Devin Bale showcased promising potential during the Red-White game. Judging by last season’s statistics, one might doubt his suitability for the role.
While Fletcher averaged 47 yards per punt in the humid SEC climates, Bale’s average was only 41 yards per punt in the thin air of Northern Colorado. However, the benefits of an SEC training regimen, nutritional program, and access to top-tier special teams coaching cannot be overlooked. Bale’s performance in the spring session suggests significant improvement.
During the open kicking competition last Saturday, Bale launched a couple of punts over 60 yards, which likely eased the concerns of Sam Pittman and Scott Fountain. Despite distance being crucial, a punt with a longer hang time can sometimes be more effective than a longer punt with a shorter hang time, as it can outpace the coverage.
Bale’s initial kick held up for 4.41 seconds, followed by another punt of 63 yards with an improved hang time of 4.48 seconds. If he continues to progress and achieves a hang time closer to five seconds, Arkansas could boast a formidable punter. Pittman’s confidence in the punting lineup’s improvement could lead to the allocation of an additional roster spot for enhancing depth, potentially influencing close games in the fall.
