Lions coach Dan Campbell will be absent from the rookie minicamp due to personal matters.

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell is set to miss the upcoming rookie minicamp in Allen Park due to a personal matter, as confirmed by a team source on Friday. The news was initially reported by the Detroit Free Press earlier on the same day.

The rookie class of 2024, along with undrafted free agents and tryout players, will gather in Allen Park for the minicamp this weekend. Both veterans and rookies are anticipated to return for the team’s Organized Team Activities (OTAs) commencing on May 21. Campbell, who is scheduled to address the team before the OTA session, is expected to resume his duties by then.

The Lions are scheduled for two additional OTA periods in May before heading into a mandatory minicamp during the first week of June. The OTAs are slated to conclude on June 10.

Campbell, now in his fourth season as the Lions’ head coach, played a pivotal role in the team’s success in 2023. The Lions achieved several milestones that season, including winning their first playoff game since 1991, securing 12 regular season victories (tying a franchise record), clinching their first division title since 1993, and making their second-ever appearance in the NFC Championship Game.

During the offseason, the Lions have been focused on retaining key players from the roster that contributed to their success in 2023. This includes signing contract extensions for receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell, as well as working on an extension for quarterback Jared Goff.

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Lions concentrated on bolstering their defense. They traded up in the first round to select cornerback Terrion Arnold and drafted cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the second round.
