SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – New Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard is expected to be in the mix for spring ball after recently having surgery on the ankle he injured this past season.
Leonard just joined the Irish this offseason after spending the first three seasons of his college career at Duke.
According to our reporting partners at, Leonard recently underwent ankle surgery, but is expected to be a full participant in spring practice. A source with knowledge of the situation says a mid-January physical exam revealed that his ankle was not fully restored from the injury he originally suffered .
The Tribune reports there’s still optimism within the program that Leonard will recover in time to go through at least some winter workouts ahead of spring ball. The start of spring practice has not been announced yet, but a mid-March start date is possible since Notre Dame’s Blue-Gold Game is .
Leonard was the primary starter for the Blue Devils starting his sophomore season in 2022 when he started 13 games, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards with 20 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He’s also very effective on the ground as well, rushing for over 1,200 yards in his career with 19 rushing scores.
