The New York Yankees are actively pursuing a former Phillies starter.

The New York Yankees are facing a clear need for additional starting pitching. Although ace Gerrit Cole cannot be replaced, efforts are underway to soften his absence for a few months.

Despite calls from fans to pursue Blake Snell, a two-time Cy Young winner, the Yankees’ front office seems reluctant to meet the high financial demands set by Snell and his agent Scott Boras. Instead, there’s a reported interest in Michael Lorenzen, formerly with the Philadelphia Phillies, according to USA Today.

Lorenzen, who shifted from the bullpen to the rotation recently after moving from the Cincinnati Reds to the Los Angeles Angels, has declined multiple offers in the $5-7 million range. The Yankees could easily surpass these offers on a one-year deal. The right-hander’s career saw a highlight in the 2023 MLB season with his first All-Star selection and a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals.

In 2023, Lorenzen recorded a 4.18 ERA and 1.209 WHIP while playing for the Detroit Tigers and Phillies. However, his performance wavered towards the end of the season, possibly contributing to his current unsigned status and lingering questions about his durability as a starter.

New York presents an appealing opportunity for Lorenzen to establish himself as a starting pitcher and earn a significant contract. The Yankees would benefit from his affordable acquisition to help fill in for Cole’s absence. Once Cole returns, Lorenzen could slot into the back of the rotation, instantly bolstering New York’s roster.
