Andrew Dutkanych IV, a right-handed pitcher, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh round.
Andrew Dutkanych IV, a right-handed pitcher from Vanderbilt, was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals as the 201st pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He becomes the fourth Commodore selected in this year’s draft.
Dutkanych was highly regarded as a potential first-round pick in high school but faced setbacks early in his college career. A leg injury during his freshman year kept him out of Vanderbilt’s rotation for much of that season. In 2024, he showed promise by starting strong with a scoreless outing against FAU, but his progress was hindered once again by a Tommy John surgery in March of his sophomore year, marking his second major injury in as many years.
Coming out of high school in 2022, Dutkanych was considered one of Indiana’s top right-handed pitchers and was among the nation’s top recruits. Despite his evident talent, persistent health issues prevented him from fully showcasing his skills during his time with the Vandy Boys. The Cardinals’ decision to draft him reflects their confidence in his potential, contingent on his ability to stay healthy and fulfill his promise on the mound.
